The Athlone and Cape Flats Chapter of the Cape Chamber invites you to the Annual Disability Summit via Zoom.
We will explore how to create workplaces for the future, where disabled staff feel like they belong. We will also shine a light on best practice from a variety of organisations that have successfully supported disability in the workplace.
Guest Speakers and Topics:
- Sid Peimer -The Chamber's view on the benefits of employing persons with disabilities
- Michael Bagraim - The amendments to the Employment Equity Act and the disability targets
- Wendy Nefdt and Alex Franz - Overview of the Institute of the Promotion of Disabled Manpower (IPDM) and Disability Advice Desks (DAD) in the Community, and an update to the corporate sector of services rendered in the promotion of employment of persons with disabilities.
- Lidia Pretorius - How might a Transversal Disability Law in South Africa change the landscape for economic liberation of persons with disabilities? South Africa already has an enabling legal and policy environment that advances the rights of persons with disabilities. Yet most persons with disabilities who are in the economically active category remain impoverished, dependent on disability grants, learnership stipends or minimum wage level income. What potential value does a transversal disability law, currently in development, add to accelerate and enhance the economic liberation of adults with disabilities?
- Waseema Herabai - Holistic Approach to Disability Management. It is imperative that the management of employees with medical incapacity have their cases managed in a substantive and procedurally fair manner. Due to the complexities of the different pieces of legislation in this regard management should establish adequate governance structures to ensure full compliance with the consideration to their operational requirements
